Typhoon Usagi with Updates

Seit Freitag beobachten wir hier alle sehr genau die Route, die Taifun Usagi einschlägt, denn er ist auf direktem Weg nach Hong Kong und soll Sonntag Abend eintreffen. Bisher brachte er schon große Hitze (über 35 Grad) mit einer hot weather warning mit Brandgefahr sowie stärkeren Wind als sonst, der aber sehr angenehm bei den Temperaturen war. In den Lebensmittelgeschäften merkte man auch, dass die Menschen davon ausgehen, dass es morgen schwieriger wird mit dem Einkaufen.

Update: Heute morgen war dann schon das Signal 3, so dass die morgendliche swimming session ausfallen musste. Und was ist das? Kreuze aus Klebeband an den Fenstern? Also mal JTEBS machen und ggf. noch Klebeband (Tape) kaufen gehen.

Tatsächlich: als Vorsichtsmaßnahme für Taifune der Stärke 8 wird empfohlen, große Fenster mit Tapestreifen zu versehen, was zwar nicht das mögliche Zerbrechen der Schreiben, aber den Schaden falls es geschieht reduzieren soll. Das Signal 8 wird gegen 19 Uhr erwartet und inzwischen sind alle Fenster beklebt, was mich 4 komplette Rollen (a 11 HKD = 1,10 Euro) und ein bisschen Arbeit gekostet hat - wir haben doch eine ganze Menge Fenster!! Damit bin ich aber übrigens die Einzige weit und breit in der Nachbarschaft, die sich an diese Vorsichtsmaßnahme gehalten hat. Wahrscheinlich typisches Anfängerverhalten ;)

    

Außerdem gilt: Complete all precautions now before gales commence. Lock all windows and doors. Fit bars into positions and insert reinforced shutters and gates if available. 
Adhesive tape fixed to large window panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass.
Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken. Now is the time to decide which rooms you will use to shelter if the windows on the exposed side of your home become broken.
Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.
Avoid staying in the street. Return home as soon as possible if conditions so permit.

Meinen Beetle durfte ich auch eine Etage höher parken, damit er komplett überdacht steht. Und bei dieser Gelegenheit habe ich mir dann auch mal unserem Leseraum in der 3. Etage angeschaut. Sehr nett und mit ein paar interessanten Büchern.

Update: Das Signal 8 wurde um 18.40 Uhr ausgerufen, jetzt soll man sich nicht mehr draußen aufhalten und seitdem heult der Wind auch ein bisschen doller am Fenster, aber es fühlt sich sicher und gut Zuhause an. Inzwischen hat Usagi das Land erreicht, ca.140km nordöstlich von Hong Kong: Severe Typhoon Usagi has made landfall near the coastal areas of Shanwei. At 8 p.m., Usagi was centred about 140 kilometres east-northeast of Hong Kong (near 22.7 degrees north 115.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour and continue to cross the coastal areas of Guangdong.Usagi will skirt to the north of the territory at around 100 km later tonight and early tomorrow morning. 
Storm surge and heavy rain brought by Usagi may cause flooding in low lying areas. Northwesterly winds are now affecting Hong Kong and some parts of the territory are sheltered. However, when gales turn to the southwest tomorrow morning, currently sheltered areas will become exposed. The public should continue to be on the alert, and take precautions against strong winds and flooding.
In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Lau Fau Shan and Chek Lap Kok were 68, 63 and 62 kilometres per hour respectively.

Update: At 10 p.m., Severe Typhoon Usagi was centred about 110 kilometres northeast ... Due to the storm surge induced by Usagi, the sea levels are expected to be about 0.5 to 1 metre above normal tide levels...In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Lau Fau Shan and Star Ferry were 90, 78 and 65 kilometres per hour respectively.

Update (23.09,): Geschlafen wie ein Stein und nichts mehr weiter von Usagi mitbekommen. Inzwischen ist er 160km nordwestlich von uns und wird nicht mehr als 'super typhoon' oder 'severe typhoon' (schwerer Taifun) sondern nur noch als 'typhoon' eingestuft, trotzdem gilt weiterhin das Signal 8: The Hong Kong Obersatory repeated the No. 8 Storm Signal at 4 a.m. local time, meaning winds of at least 63 kilometers (39 miles) an hour are expected, while downgrading Usagi to a tropical cyclone as it moves gradually away from the city. The storm, rated the world’s strongest typhoon this year, was about 120 kilometers northwest of Hong Kong and moving west-northwest at about 22 kilometers an hour. The city recorded maximum sustained winds of 73 kilometers an hour.
Der Flughafen wurde ab 18 Uhr gestern Abend geschlossen, was zig Tausende gestrandeter Passagiere von mind. 440 Flüge zur Folge hatte. Es wird erwartet, dass das Signal 8 zwischen 7 und 9 Uhr wieder aufgehoben wird, dann herrscht hier wieder 'business as usual'.
